| Here are some of my favourite eating spots in town, and the things that make them special.... | ![]() |
|
You can pack a suitcase, but you should take both time and pleasure when eating. |
Note: Since the Georgina Council has enacted an outright ban on smoking in most restaurants in Georgina, I will only be reporting on those restaurants that include smoking. For my reasons (and regrets) click here.
I
eat out a lot, in many different restaurants, and for many different reasons. I
like some for value, others for the atmosphere, and some for a particular dish
that makes the restaurant special. So I'm a bit of an authority on what's being
served in Georgina, and surrounding area. Here is a list of some of my favourite
chow-down establishments, and the reasons I keep going back.

| Peninsula Restaurant and Riverside Patio | At the end of Holme's Point Road, off Hwy. 48, just west of the Pefferlaw Road | Beautiful setting, comfortable
atmosphere, and Eggs Benedict (L.L.B.O.)
*Smoking is allowed on the Riverside Patio during the summer months. *See the Peninsula Resort web page at: www.peninsularesort.net. |
This is a jewel of a restaurant. It features almost everything I like in an eating establishment. It's intimate and comfortable, plus it has linen table clothes and a very pretty view. So you can enjoy your meal while watching the wild life and boats going up and down the river. It is also one of the few places in town where you can order Eggs Benedict that are beautifully prepared, and expertly served. It's a real winner in my books. O, and do try some of Marga's soups. She is truly the "Queen of Soups". |
| Lake Simcoe Arms Pub and Restaurant | Dalton Road & Lake Drive, Jackson's Point | Comfortable, English-Pub atmosphere, top
notch food, and excellent service.
*Smoking is allowed on the deck during the summer months. *See the Lake Simcoe Arms web page at: www.lakesimcoearms.com |
From the time you sit down, until you are ready to leave, you know that this is a first class eating establishment. The serving staff is one of the best trained, and most professional I have encountered anywhere. The food is also first class. Do try the Steak and Kidney Pie. A beautiful flaky crust, large chunks of kidney, and steak that hasn't been over cooked. It's just the way this dish was intended to be. The Shepherd's pie is also a 'must try'. In addition, The Lake Simcoe Arms offers a Sunday Brunch from 8:30 til noon, with a wide variety of choices that all look very appealing. Altogether, it is just first class. |
| The Mansion House Hotel | High Street, Sutton | Prime Rib of Beef Roast, Friday Evening
Special
*Smoking is allowed in the pub area, only. |
This cut of Prime Rib has to be seen/tasted, to be believed! The cut is called "The Mansion House", and it is at least 2" thick. In addition, it is cooked to perfection (i.e., 'medium rare' is really medium rare). The Mansion House is a landmark in Sutton, having stood in the same spot since the 1860s. It's now operated by Jack Boudrow & family, another well known family in the area. The decor is quaint and comfortable, and the prices are very reasonable ("Mansion House Cut" - about $16). You won't be able to eat it all, so you can ask for a 'doggy bag'. Try it for sure. |
| The Belvedere Hotel | Main Street in Pefferlaw | Chicken Wings, and Cheese Burgers (L.L.B.O.)
*Smoking is allowed |
Just about everyone who has ever visited Pefferlaw knows the Belvedere, but not too many are aware of Helen and Larry's crispy chicken wings, and juicy cheese burgers. They're the best I've ever tasted. The wings are dusted with season salt and cayenne pepper, then deep-fried until they are a golden brown. They're also available in take-out orders (if you don't want to be seen in a hotel). The conversation is great too. |
| Port Side Restaurant and Grill | Hwy. 48, at the Esso Station just east of Sutton. | Breakfast Special | This is the best breakfast-special in town. Three eggs, bacon, and home fries, plus bottom-less cup of coffee, for around $4.00. Frank and Helen are your hosts, and the service is fast and friendly. It's also a great place to meet some neighbourly people. |
| The Golden Dragon Restaurant | Jackson's Point | Hot and Sour Soup (L.L.B.O.) | I have a passion for savory soups, and this is one of the best. It's hot and spicy, and will perk up your taste buds, guaranteed. I also like the crispy beef. The atmosphere is spacious and comfortable, and the service is friendly. The Golden Dragon also has a take-out, and free delivery service for orders over $20.00 (905-722-6551). |
| The Best Western Hotel & Conference Center | Jackson's Point | Upscale Atmosphere & Service
(L.L.B.O.)
*Smoking is allowed on the deck during summer months. *See the Georgina Inn web site at: www.georginainn.com. |
If you're looking for a restaurant with just a touch of class, then go to the Best Western, where the ambiance is quiet and relaxed, but it is also classy enough for a dress-up occasion. The food is good, and the service is excellent (thanks to Evelyn's very professional skill). It also has a spacious deck for dining outdoors, and a wonderful view all year round. |
If you operate a restaurant and would like it to be included in my Chowing-Down in Georgina list, just click here to send me an invite, and I'll drop around for a chow-down.
