My aunt Evelenine was probably the most interesting of all my aunts. She was an independent spirit, extremely shy and reclusive, but exceptionally capable. It was she who operated the farm, rather than my uncle Frederick, including virtually all the manual chores...From mucking out the stable, to cutting firewood in the bush.

I don't know whether she did these things because she preferred them to domestic chores, or whether she did them by 'default'. Nonetheless, she performed them with remarkable strength and skill. On the other side, my uncle Fred occupied a somewhat passive role, and displayed the 'public face' to the activity on the farm

She was also gentle, and caring. This was particularly so of animals and nature. She built bird houses, planted a marvelous flower garden, fed squirrels, and painted rustic pictures of deer. All of them shy but free creatures of nature, like herself.

It seems appropriate, therefore, that she should be photographed on the farm (which she hardly ever left, except to attend church) with one of her dogs. In my mind, it is a delightful scene.
