The Burnie Family Roundup!

[Last updated: 04/15/2003 ]

Hi there....

Got some news?...a birthday?...announcement?...or just want to say "hello". We're all interested in hearing from you.

Hi cousins! It occurred to me that the Burnie Family Album couldn't be complete without a present tense, so I created this page for the present generations to keep in touch, share news, or just say "hello".

I hope you will drop by often, but most of all, I hope you will participate. We're all part of a wonderful family, so let's keep in touch more often.

To post a message, just click here, and I will post it to the Roundup page within 24 hours.

Regards to all, Gerry.

Looking For Tom Burnie

April 16, 2003

Hello my name is Lee Conlin. I live in Adelaide Australia.

I was born here in 1962, at which time I was given up for adoption. Several years ago I contacted my birth mother who told me she met my father Tom Burnie when he was traveling through Australia during the early 1960s. She was living in Whyalla at the time.

Apart from his name all she could tell me was that he was from Ireland, he has green eyes, is about 5' - 10" tall, and has dark hair.

Please post this on your website, and say a little prayer for my success.

Thank you and kindest regards, Lee Conlin.

I can be reached via email on witczak@bigpond.com.

Hello all Burnies,

I just stumbled across this website and I am very glad that I did. I live in Palm Bay, Florida but was born and grew up in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. I am the son of Raymond Burnie and he is the son of Hanford Burnie. There are several Burnies in and around South Western Nova Scotia (Annapolis Royal, Digby, Yarmouth)and also in the Halifax area.

Hello Cousins

My apologies for not keeping in touch. However much has been happening which has occupied my attention and most of my time for the past while.

First and foremost the Morning Glory Inn farm, home to the Burnies of Georgina for nearly a century, was sold this summer. However I am delighted to say that the new squire of MGIF, Tim MacRae and wife Michelle, is a 2nd cousin on my mother's side. So the title stays in the family, so to speak. I am now a resident of Orillia, ON, and very happy with house and town.

In the meantime it took me nearly 2 1/2 months to sort and dispose of 3 generations of accumulation, not one of which ever parted with a single possession (including yours truly). It was like an archeological dig.

Next on the agenda was setting up the household here in Orillia. It was a pleasant enough project, but took a lot of arranging and decision making to get things right. However I am happy to say that it is coming along quite nicely.

Then there was a change of computers to get onto Roger's hi-speed, which I still haven't accomplished after nearly a 2 months of trying. This means that I don't have a permanernt email address to give you. However, the gerry@burniefamilyalbum.net address is still active.

Hoping you are all well and looking forward to the Christmas season.

Warmest regards,

Gerry

From: Michael McCartney (mmjr63@hotmail.com)

Just found your site on Burnies, very exciting, hopefully you can help us. My mother is a Burnie, Clyne Burnie, her father was Vic Burnie from Virginia (Ontario) and his father was Francis Burnie. Apparently Francis had 4 children, my grandfather, Vic who died May 1, 1964 at age 53, Art Burnie, Clyne Burnie and another daughter (her name escapes me at the moment) in checking your site I can find no history of this side of the family but I do know that I have relatives buried at St. Anthony's church as we have stopped on the way to our cottage in Minden to explore.

I also have a "family heirloom" which was left to me by my aunt Clyne, Francis' daughter, it is a bible printed in 1899 and attached to the inside cover is a very old note which is word for word the inscription on John Burnie's gravestone as per your site, added to it though is, "Requiem in Peace amen. Dead 71 years." there is also an original daguerreotype of a lady that is definitley from the 1800's.
I would love to hear back from you. regards.

[I don't have a record of a Clyne, nor a Vic (Victor) Burnie, but I do have a record of a Francis. Very exciting news about the bible, and the inscription "Requiem.....71 years" which is hidden on the grave marker. Also hope you can spare a copy of the note and daguerreotype. Thanks Michael.]

 Hello Gerry,

My grandfather was Francis Frederic Burnie (son of Charles Burnie and Elizabeth Leduc)

Francis Frederic had one child with Theresa Hamelin before he died of a burst
 appendix:

Charles Francis Burnie, b May 6, 1924 Toronto, ON, d April 24, 1992 at  Simcoe, ON (from complications of Gaucher's disease)

Married  Etta Knox at London, ON, December 27, 1957

 two children:

Mary Catherine Burnie, b August 23, 1960 at Chatham, ON
Cameron Andrew Burnie, b May 5, 1962 at Chatham, ON married Michele Lynn
Stengel at Simcoe, ON, July 11, 1987, three children:

Michael Charles Burnie, b August 7, 1991 at Hamilton, ON
Brandon Andrew Burnie, b August 7, 1991 at Hamilton, ON
Christopher Aaron Burnie, b April 2, 1997 at Simcoe, ON

So Gerry, the question becomes how do we get included in the Burnie Family  Album?  Because my grandfather died when my dad was only two years old we did lose touch with the Burnie side of the family although my dad did go visit his grandmother in the summers (he grew up in Guelph) when he got
older as he could never miss going to the CNE.  I was simply thrilled to come across this because we know a lot about everyone except the Burnie's

 Sincerely,

 Mary Burnie

[Thanks for the note, Mary, and the family tree has been updated to include your information. Thanks Again.]

Hi Gerry

Congratulations on the Burnie web site. I am Colin Burnie and I live in Oxfordshire, England: I see I am on your list!

My branch of the Burnie family is descended from William Burnie (1803 - 1864) who was a farmer at Little Whitriggs Farm, near Lockerbie, Scotland.  He was illegitimate, and beyond knowing that his father was also William Burnie and also a farmer, I am ashamed to say that, after more than 30 years of research, I am no nearer tracing the family further back. However, I know quite a lot about his descendants and I would be only too happy to share what I know with anyone who's interested. Please Email me at colin-burnie@supanet.com

Incidentally, I have a very old bookplate with a Burnie coat of arms on it. My guess would be that it is eighteenth century but it might be more recent. The name on it is William Burnie, and the arms have been impaled with another coat of arms (presumably William Burnie's wife). The Burnie part is in three horizontal sections and shows, from top to bottom, a bow and arrow, a hand holding an anchor, and three legs, the heraldic description being "Gules, a fesse argent, betwen a bow and arrow in full draught in chief and three men's legs couped at the thighs in fesse paleways of the second in base." The motto is "Arcus Artes Astra" (bow, arts, stars) and the significance of that, apart from the obvious, is anyone's guess. According to the General Armory the arms were proper to the BIRNIE family of Broomhill, Scotland and were also used, with slight variations by Sir Alexander Birnie of Saline, Scotland. The William Burnie of the bookplate may have been descended from Sir Alexander (spelling of surnames not being standardised until well into the nineteenth century) or he may simply have appropriated it for himself!

The Burnie family of Scotland are a sept of the Matheson clan and in a few days' time I shall be proudly wearing my kilt at my sister-in-law's wedding. As it's taking place in the south of France I expect to get extremely hot!

Regards

Colin Burnie

A mile stone for the Burnie Family Album

Sometime today the Burnie Family Album web site will welcome it's 2000th visitor since it was first posted about 24 months ago. So here is my personal welcome and thanks. I hope these pages have been a help in getting to know more about the family, and maybe finding a lost connection.

Many thanks

A message for the relatives of Harry Saelman...

Dear Gerry,

I was surprised to find out that a certain Harry Saelman seems to be (have been?) married to the great granddaughter of John Burnie.

I myself come from a family of Saelman that originates in Holland, although I have heard that our ancestors really come from Germany.....it's a long story. I was wondering if Harry Saelman or his relatives would be interested in this ? Is he aware of his Dutch roots ?

Good luck with your search !

Yours faithfully,
Desiree E.M. Saelman

Hi Gerry,

Reading all the BURNIE entries I couldn't help but notice that they are Canadian. My BURNIE'S are from Scotland.  I wonder if anyone has linked their family to Scotland, if so maybe we can exchange information.

My family are from the Dumfries and Galloway area.   Our BURNIE'S were farmers and Quarry men. Would love to hear from some Scotland BURNIE'S also.

John Burnie's family came from Glasgow, Scotland and in the store business. Tell us more John about your family and yourself.
.
A couple of our Burnie  men came to Canada in the early 1900  joined the Canadian army and were sent back over the sea to fight for King and Country in 1915.  One returned to Scotland via Bath, England and the other returned to Canada settling in Winnipeg, Man. He married, fathered
a son and stayed his remaining days of his life in Winnipeg.

Hope to hear from some other Burnie's via your web site!

Would you mind posting  your answer to David Burnie's question regarding
the tartan on the site so all can read!

Regards  Janet Burnie-McKnight

[Thanks for the info Janet. I have forwarded a copy of your note to John in England. Regarding David's query about the "tartan", etc., my reply to him was as follows:

Regarding the family coat of arms, you may be quite right in thinking that one does not exist. The heraldic house that supplied the one appearing on the web site is by no means an 'official' heraldic group. Therefore I was careful to disavow any claim as to its authenticity. However, I thought it was interesting, and attractive, so I included it.

I too hope that we can discover some roots in the 'Old Country'. So if anyone has any clues along this line, please....please pass them along. Gerry]

April 10, 2002

Hello Gerry,

I notice you have Annie Burnie who was married March 26, 1883 in Brant Township on your mystery Burnie list. Annie Creighton Burnie was my grandmother, born in Ontario in 1856, daughter of John Burnie (or Bernie) and Margaret Munro.

My family story says Margaret came to Brant Township with her young daughter, Annie, after John died of typhoid fever while they were living in the vicinity of St. Catherines. I have not found any records of the family before Margaret remarried in 1863.

I am not even sure if the name was Burnie or Bernie. Although it was spelled Burnie on my grandmother's marriage and death records, she became part of her stepfather's family when she was very young and went by her stepfather's name; so may have guessed at the spelling of her father's name. There were a number of Bernies in Brant Township from 1861 to 1881.

In searching for my great grandparents I have copied the names of a number of Burnies and Bernies. If you want any more mystery Burnies I would be glad to send them to you.

Although I did not find any connection I appreciated your website.

 Regards, Phyllis Churchill
churchil@muskoka.com

Many thanks for this information, Phyllis. Another mystery solved...but a couple more added (as is usual while searching a family history). So now the question becomes "who was this John Burnie, and who does he belong to?" Does anyone have any answers? - Gerry.

Welcome to the family, guys.

February 21, 2002

Can anyone provide me more information on this Burnie?

The following obituary appeared in a Toronto newspaper sometime in December 2001:

Burnie, Helen Loretto, R.N., (Long time Pro Life Activist) Passed away suddenly at her home, after a lengthy courageous battle with cancer, on December 3, 2001. Predeceased by her parents William and Margaret Burnie and brother William and sisters Audrey and Theresa. Lovingly remembered by her sisters Rita and Dr. Ruth Burnie Smyth, and Mary. A Funeral Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic followed by internment at Mount Hope Cemetery.

My condolences go out to all of Ms Burnie's surviving relatives, as well as a wish for eternal peace.

_______________________

February 22, 2002. Father Jim Burnie writes that he knew Helen Loretto very well. He believes that she is descended from James Burnie of Victoria Harbour. His connection is as follows: James3, John2, John1. James Burnie was born March 2, 1870, and married Mary Carley February 21, 1898 in Victoria Harbour. However, I have no information regarding the generations between Helen Loretto, and James.

If anyone can fill in the gap, I would greatly appreciate the information. (gerry@burniefamilyalbum.net

Hi cousins:

It's a quiet time of year, so there is very little news to report. If you have any events that you would like to share, please send them along.

Meanwhile it is early spring here at the farm, maple sugar time. As a child maple sugar time was a wonderful time of year. Not only did it mean that we (Beverley and I) were allowed to stay up passed sunset, but also that we could accompany our father Maurice, and uncle Fred Laviolette, to the sugar bush for the boil off.

Watching the blazing fire from the brick furnace, and the steam rolling from the two pans of sap, made a magical sight. In addition it came with sampling privileges, and a sleigh ride home in the moonlight. What child wouldn't be thrilled?

Greetings to Vernon Burnie of Creemore, ON, and Rev. Howard Burnie (pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church), wife Marla, and son Neil Abraham, of Lumsden, Saskatchewan. It is great to hear from all of you.

Regards to all, Gerry

Dear Gerry

Greetings from London and thank you again for your newslink. Could you please note my new email address:

jburnie@globalnet.co.uk

My father John Malcolm Burnie sends you his warm regards from Emsworth near Southampton. He was born in 1932 in Mafeking, Basutoland (now Lesotho) in South Africa. He is the son of the late Robert Burnie (my grandfather) who emigrated to Africa from Glasgow, Scotland shortly after the Great European War in 1918. Robert "Bobby" Burnie was a well known hotelier in Durban for most of his working life and, as was the custom in African Colonial days, he had a number of guests who lived in his hotel for up to 30 years! The Burnie family were all shop traders in Glasgow and my father has in his records a photograph of the Burnie Store in Glasgow that was taken in about 1890. I will soon post you a jpeg image of this historic photo for your album.

With Kind Regards
JOHN BURNIE
Born Chichester, England 1952.

Looking for Burnies in Sheho, Saskatchewan

Hi fellow Burnies:

Recently, I spent an afternoon with Marg Godfrey--our congenial curator at the Georgina Village Museum archives--and together we gleaned some interesting information about the Burnie family from a variety of township records.

Most of this information is not new, but it does provide a record of who was around between 1855 and 1915, and where some of them lived in the township. The list of Burnies is inserted below, but I have also created a web page which reveals the the location of their respective properties. To go to that map, click here.

If you have any questions about any of this material, just write me at gerry@burniefamilyalbum.net

Gerry.

-----------------------------------------------------

Entries for the surname Burnie, Township of Georgina

 1855 Assessment Roll

William Burnie, Con. 6, W1/2 Lot 18

John Burnie, Con. 6, W1/2 Lot 20

Note 1: Because the property description for John Burnie is consistent with a later entry dated  1871 (see below), which shows his age as 51, the above two individuals are probably the sons of John Sr., the patriarch.

Note 2: There is also an entry for a John Dority, Con. 6, E1/2 Lot 20, which is next door to John Burnie’s property. Could this individual be related to Rose Ann Dougherty, the wife of John Sr.?

1863 Collector’s Roll

 James Burnie, Age: 37, Con. 7, S1/2 Lots 17 & 18

Note 1: This age would place his birth date around 1826, i.e., 3 – 5 years younger than the son of John Sr. However, since birth records generally remained behind in the country of origin (Ireland?), the age of an individual relied on memory and was frequently only an estimate. This James is probably the son of John Sr.

Note 2: There is an entry of interest for a John & James Doyle (frequently connected to the Burnies), Con. 7, E1/2 & W1/2 Lot 14.

1871 Assessment Roll

 John Burnie, Age: 51 (b. abt. 1820), Con. 6, W1/2 Lot 20, Con. 7, E1/2 Lot 14.

Charles Burnie, Age: 44 (b. abt. 1827), Con. 6, W1/2 Lot 20 (tenant), owner: Geo. Evans

William Burnie, Age: 47 (b. abt. 1824), Occupation: farmer & J.P., Con. 6, W1/2 Lot 18

James Burnie, Age: 28 (b. abt. 1843), Con. 5, E1/4 Lot 18

Note: Based on his date of birth, I have no idea who this James Burnie might be. I can find no “James” among the sons of the 1st or 2nd generations that would fit.

1900 Collectors Roll

 Alfred Burnie, Age: 31 (b. abt. 1869), P.O.#3, S.S.#3, Con. 3, Lot 7.

John Burnie, Age: 75 (b. abt. 1825)

Francis Burnie, Age: 36 (b. abt. 1864)

Mary Burnie

James Burnie, Age: 76 (b. abt. 1824)

W. H. Burnie (probably “William Henry”)

George Burnie, Age: 29 (b. abt. 1871)

Thomas Burnie, Age: 35 (b. abt. 1865)

Martin Burnie, Age: 23 (b. abt. 1877)

Miscellaneous entries

September 14, 2001

Hi cousins:

I just returned from a trip to Muskoka in search of James Burnie, who is listed in the 1837 Home District Directory, and in Hunter's "History of Simcoe County," as one of its pioneers. Although I didn't find any information on this James, I did find some new information about another James Burnie* (1870 - ?), including a marriage certificate--dated February 21, 1898--to a Mary Carey.

On January 28, 1899, James and Mary had their first baby, Mary, who regretfully died one hour of her birth. She is buried at the Mt. St. Louis Roman Catholic Cemetery. There is a grave marker for daughter Mary, but none for James and Mary.

I also found several references to other Burnies that I can't place, but they might mean something to someone else. So I am going to list these as a service to other searchers. To view this list, click here.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone who has a knowlegde of the above namesakes. Also, if anyone has any information about the elusive "1837 John Burnie" please, PLEASE send it my way. He may hold the link back to Ireland, or Scotland.

Much love to all, Gerry
